What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a health care profession concerned with human function and
movement and maximising physical potential.
Physiotherapists aim to develop, maintain
and restore maximum movement and functional ability. This involves the provision
of services in circumstances where movement and function are threatened by the
process of aging or that of injury or disease. Full and functional movement is
seen as at the heart of what it means to be healthy.
Physiotherapy is concerned with identifying and
maximising movement potential, within the spheres of promotion, prevention,
treatment and rehabilitation. The physiotherapists expert knowledge of the human
body and its movement needs and potential is central to determining a diagnosis
and treatment requirements.
At your initial visit, your physiotherapist will
ask you a few questions to determine the cause of your problem and any other
relevant details. They will then perform a physical examination of the injured
area to enable them to make a diagnosis. The physiotherapist will then take time
to clearly explain their findings and how they feel physiotherapy can help.
Patient education is considered by the therapists at Coastal Physiotherapy to be
a vital component in the rehabilitation progress and essential to a fast and
effective recovery.
Treatment will consist of "hands-on" techniques
to reduce muscle pain and tightness and alleviate joint stiffness; ongoing
education and advice; exercise therapy to improve muscle flexibility, strength,
core stability and balance; and if appropriate the use of equipment such as heat
packs, ultrasound, and electrotherapy. We can also provide recommendations
on bracing, taping, pillows, therapeutic rubs and walking aids - which can also
be ordered at low prices directly from our clinic (see
Products).
The physiotherapist also conducts
pre-employment assessments. The pre-employment assessments are an
objective functional assessment of a person's ability to perform the essential
physical demands of a job. A tailored assessment assists employers to
provide a safe working environment by ensuring their prospective employees are
physically suited to the job. This ultimately will assist in reducing an
employers premiums associated with workplace injuries and lost time.
